blood and dreams

I made strawberry juice for breakfast. We ran out of eggs, so pancakes were off the menu, and I needed to spice up our biscuits and fruit salad and bacon (turkey variety). The kids did their part about spicing up the conversation. For them, the juice could be blood! This went on, and on, with plans to serve it at a Halloween party. Then Ali asked, "Are we warm blooded or cold blooded." I wasn't really thinking, and replied "cold blooded." (What can I say? The frozen strawberries in the juice were getting to me.) Leila set him straight- "warm blooded." Ali then suggested that for the party we put the juice in the oven to warm it up. He thought that would be more authentic. Leila preferred we freeze it and just tell people we're cold blooded. I agree.
Leila is practicing "Do, Re, Mi" which we picked out by ear yesterday. She's doing well.
Last night I had this wonderful dream that I was at a table (kitchen table?) with the son of the president of a big soda pop company in Colombia and the president, too. I was giving them the idea to make natural soda, not using fake sugar but real sugar. Then I threw in the idea of having small farmers in Colombia produce the fruit that would flavor them. It was a revolutionary dream. I wish we could do that- have the big companies in Colombia buy directly from coops of small farmers who would then have a market for legal produce. We could call it Sin Coca, Cola. (without Coca, Cola.)

copious tears

Last night Leila sat down to watch Pollyana. This is a new version made a few years ago for Masterpiece Theatre, and set in Britain, not the 1960s version that I remember. I warned her that it was sad, but being busy with other things, I didn't sit down with her. About an hour into the movie, I heard Ali saying something comforting to her, so I went out to check on her. When I sat down beside her, she threw herself into my arms, sobbing. I assured her that it ended happily, but she wanted me to watch the rest with her, so I settled in.
Then Ali started to cry (although it seemed a little fake at first). "This reminds me of my dream last night," he said. He had woken up crying from a sad dream that Grandma died. I suggested we call her, and set him up to talk to her. Soon he came back into the living room, crying in earnest. Apparently recounting the dream made him even sadder. I got him started on another topic, and returned to my weepy couch potato. Soon the movie ended, happily, I guess, though I don't think they emphasized Pollyana regaining her ability to walk enough.
The kids headed for bed- Ali still rather sad, and, apparently, hungry. (A frequent occurence). I gave him some cantaloupe, and when I went to tuck him in, he said, "I'm happy now that I had melon."
The other funny thing that happened yesterday was I told Ali we'd be seeing his friend Titus today- "Can I fall down now?" he asked me. "What?" "I fainted," he said. He's very excited.

dream cars

Many years ago, I wanted this car:

In fact, I was just about to get one, to plunk all my savings down on a cute little roadster. But something stopped me. And shortly thereafter, I was pregnant and the money came in handy for a down payment on a house.
Two kids later, this is my new dream car:
