Why I teach

Today my students wrote questions that they wanted the other students to write answers to. Nobody answered the one asking about our dreams, and the writer explained why she'd written it:
Today I have my dream. When I was overseas, I dreamed of going to college in America for one day to see how the teachers teach and how it is. And today I do this.
The class applauded. Another woman shared, too:
I finished my GED three years ago, and I wanted to come to college, but I didn't have time because my husband had a bad accident and I had to work. Then my work colleague (squeezing the hand of the woman next to her) told me that E___ has classes, so I came.
So I taught from 8 to noon today, but at least I know I'm here for a reason.

it's nice to have some affirmation after the tears. we start school in a week, and i haven't even ventured into my classroom yet. i can't bring myself to do it. which should tell me something. and it does. i know that the kids are worth the effort, and that i'll eventually feel better, but i don't today. thanks for sharing the good stuff.
