a gift

Today one of my Ethiopian students showed up with a lovely gift for me that he brought back from Ethiopia. It's a dress and a scarf, embroidered with the traditional crosses in green, orange, brown, and gold. The material is a very thin muslin, lined in a slippery polyster, and it actually fits. But the best part is the smell- smoky- like someone worked on it next to a wood fire.
This student wore traditional Ethiopian clothes so that I could photograph him for "What We Carry With Us" last year, and he promised he'd bring me some clothes of my own.
What an upper for a difficult week!
